Fogo Island & Change Islands
Where heritage meets world-class design. Home to the internationally acclaimed Fogo Island Inn, 11 historic fishing villages, and a creative energy you won't find anywhere else in Canada.
The Edge of the World
Fogo Island is one of Newfoundland's most extraordinary places. Eleven fishing villages cling to the rocky coastline, each with its own character — from the colorful saltbox houses of Joe Batt's Arm to the Irish-rooted community of Tilting, recognized as a National Historic Site.
The island gained international attention with the opening of the Fogo Island Inn, a Todd Saunders-designed architectural landmark that earned three Michelin Keys — the highest hotel distinction — in 2024. One hundred percent of the Inn's profits are reinvested into the community through Shorefast, the social enterprise that built it.
Change Islands, accessible by a 25-minute ferry from Fogo, is one of the most intimate outport communities in Newfoundland — with a population of 185 and a median age of 66. It's a place where time slows down completely.
Arts & Culture
Fogo Island Arts runs an international artist residency program that brings creators from around the world. Studios are scattered across the island. The Inn's gallery is curated with rotating exhibitions, and workshops in drawing, painting, and craft are open to visitors.
Heritage & Architecture
Fourth-generation saltbox houses over 100 years old. Todd Saunders' award-winning studio buildings perched on clifftops. The contrast between old and new is part of what makes Fogo Island feel like nowhere else.
Getting There
Ferry from Farewell terminal — 1 hour 15 minutes to Fogo Island, 25 minutes to Change Islands. First-come-first-served boarding. The crossing itself is part of the experience — open water, coastal views, and the occasional iceberg.
Landscape
Dramatic shores, rugged coastline, and wide-open skies. Icebergs, whales, and seabirds are part of daily life. The island's isolation is its greatest asset — and the reason people come back year after year.
A Niche Market with Real Character
Fogo Island real estate is unlike anything else in the province. This isn't a volume market — it's a character market. Properties here are steeped in heritage, and the buyer profile skews toward artists, creatives, retirees, and people drawn to a different kind of life.
Heritage Saltbox Homes
Historic waterfront properties with wharfs, fishing stages, and studio spaces. Some have been in families for four generations. These are rare listings when they come to market.
Artist & Creative Retreats
The international arts program draws a creative crowd. Properties with studio potential, workshop space, or proximity to the Inn's cultural programming are increasingly sought after.
Tourism & Hospitality
The Fogo Island Inn has put this island on the global luxury travel map. Vacation rentals, boutique accommodations, and experiential tourism properties represent growing investment opportunities.
